City police officers have been presented with 'trauma' teddy bears to hand out to children in need of comfort.

They will give the bears to youngsters who have come into contact with police through a distressing incident such as domestic abuse or a road accident.

A special Facebook group called Trauma bears for TVP has been set up so knitters and crocheters can produce the teddies.

"The idea is that officers will be able to give the bears to vulnerable people (such as children) who may be present at any calls they need to attend," said a spokesman for the group.

"The bears can give comfort to those who are unsettled by the officer’s attendance or the situation causing the call and can open a communication channel between the vulnerable person and the officer."

There is no set pattern for the bears but they should not be too large or cumbersome as they will need to be carried by the officers.

And there should be no small items which could be pulled off and pose a choking risk.

Grateful officers at a specialist unit at Bletchley police station received a delivery of the bears this week and said the children loved receiving them.
