Maynard is Robbo's number one choice

The 29-year-old had initially turned down a deal to remain at stadium:mk after being Dons’ top scorer last season, but made a U-turn on Saturday, signing a new one-year deal.

“He was the one player I wanted,” Robinson said. “The fans all knew that. I didn’t hide my desire to sign him. There is another I wanted in the wide area but that didn’t come off.”

“Re-signing Nicky Maynard will be massive for us. He had a brilliant goal record in League 1 when he played here as a youngster, but now he drops back down for the first time with more power and experience. He’s a better quality too, and he’s still only 29. He’s in a really good place, and he’s really happy to be here.”

Robinson now has three strikers on his books, but he admitted Tom Hitchcock would be put on the transfer list last week.

The future of Simon Church though remains unclear. With the Wales international still at the European Championships, Robinson admits Church’s future is in his own hands.

Robinson said: “People think he may be moving, but we’ve not said that at any moment. If he wants to go, that’s a decision he will make. Churchy is a very good player and another player who hasn’t dropped down to League 1 before so his quality should shine through.”
