Complaints to MK Citizen of one resident’s ‘unbearable reoccurring nightmare’ have paid off after Milton Keynes City Council took action to clear up overflowing communal bins.

Bryan Rahman, who lives in Bletchley, raised the issue with the Citizen over an overflowing communal bin storage area, near a Colossal Way housing complex, which had not been cleared by the council for some weeks.

Bryan explained: “Despite not using the communal bins, residents in houses are often forced to chip in and clean the area to avoid the stench and rats which are attracted.”

He added several pleas were made to the council by building residents to collect the rubbish, which included some bulky items, over a period of three weeks.

The contractors finally turned up, although left a pile of ‘rotting food and dirty nappies’.

When Bryan contacted the Citizen, he said the hot weather had exacerbated the issue, creating ‘pungent smells’ while rats had been spotted.

The council was contacted over the matter and two more trips were made by its contractors to clear the waste.

A spokesperson for Milton Keynes City Council has assured collections would not be missed again.

They said: “We’re sorry to hear about these issues. We immediately spoke to our contractor who confirmed they had cleared some missed waste on Saturday and will ensure the collections aren’t missed again. They also found some fly tipped bulky waste which is not something the bin crews can remove.

“Fly tipping is illegal and we take action against offenders. Bulky waste should be taken to one of our three tips or residents can book a collection by emailing or calling us.”

Bryan updated the Citizen over the issue he referred to as ‘an unbearable reoccurring nightmare’ to say it had improved, adding the contractors had also collected the bulkier items including a mattress, a pram, a suitcase and paint cans.

He added: “Looking ahead, at my cost I will be putting up signage warning people against fly tipping and abuse, and, if necessary install a camera for evidence again at my expense. Grossly unfair as we pay our council tax for this service.”

Fly-tipping can be reported via the city council’s website.
